Improving Drug Storage On Mental Health Wards

Solent NHS Trust were in the process of implementing a new EPMA system. They were also looking to upgrade their drug storage trolleys to support the new rollout.

As the main mental health services provider for people living in Portsmouth, secure drug storage is incredibly important. This is because each ward houses medication for a large number of patients at any one time.

Therefore, the EPMA team chose to seek out a long term solution that could accommodate an increased quantity of drugs for each ward.

The Brief

We held initial discussions with the Pharmacy department to determine how the Trust could replace their current medical carts. They asked how we could assist with some suggested improvements from nurses regarding their previous carts.

Furthermore, their primary objective was to increase the quantity of drug storage, as well as, reducing the number of trolleys required. This was so that medication for more patients could be securely stored in one cart.

It was also beneficial for the new carts to have an improved locking system, because the risks surrounding lost or misplaced keys could potentially affect patient safety.

Key Project Criteria

  • Improve drug storage so that more medication can be stored in one cart.
  • Eliminate the risks involving lost or misplaced keys which could potentially affect patient safety.
  • Source an easy-to-move cart that can be used across multiple bays.
  • Must be able to organise medication within the cart and accommodate bottle storage.

Our Solution

“Improve drug storage so that more medication can be stored in one cart.”
The Trust can now store all the medication they need in a single cart, making drugs rounds easier and quicker. As well as reducing the total number of carts needed.

“Eliminate the risks involving lost or misplaced keys which could potentially affect patient safety.”
New code locks were provided on all of the carts eliminating the risk of losing keys.

“Source an easy-to-move cart that can be used across several bays.”
Despite its large storage space, the MediCab Duo is easily maneuverable across several bays with its high quality castors and grab handles.

“Must be able to organise medication within the cart and accommodate bottle storage.”
Drawer dividers were provided to help nurses effectively organise their medication.

Each MediCab Duo also features a separate section at the rear of the unit specifically
designed for upright bottle storage.

The Result

Since the rollout, the new trolleys have transformed drug storage and administration on the wards. They help to consolidate all the medication and IT equipment into one easy to use workstation.

Moreover, the increased storage capacity means a single cart can be used to cover multiple bays. Therefore, making drugs rounds quicker and easier than was previously possible.

Dalen Healthcare were thrilled to work with Solent NHS Trust to assist with their EPMA rollout. Additionally, it was great to see our solutions really making a difference.
